Frequently Asked Questions - Birth Doula

What is a birth (labor) doula?

A birth doula is a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to their client before, during and shortly after childbirth to help them achieve the healthiest, most satisfying experience possible.

Does a doula replace the partner?

No. A doula is there to support everyone present, including the partner. I want to unite the family unit and amplify support. I work with your partner by encouraging them, offering guidance and reassurance, and a break when needed. During my prenatal visits, your partner will be trained in comfort measure techniques for easing labor pains, providing emotional and physical support, as well as preparing to advocate for your birth plan, or any deviations from it.

In the event that there is no other support person present, the doula can be an excellent source of support.

Will a doula be helpful if I need/want pain medication or have a cesarean delivery?

Yes. Doulas support all types of birth. This is your birth experience, not mine.

A doula can help you stay continuously informed, know your options, and help you with the questions to ask along the way so you are cared for emotionally and physically.

At cesarean births, whether planned or not, doulas are useful for cesarean birth preparedness, balancing emotions and thoughts, and keeping you informed of your options.

When should I hire a birth doula?

The earlier the better. This allows you time to find a doula that is a good fit for you and secure your birth with them. My support includes two prenatal visits to go over your birth plan, questions, concerns, and comfort measures so it can be helpful to schedule those with time to spare. If you are later in pregnancy and realizing you want a doula, we have a great community and there is likely someone that can still support you. I am happy to provide referrals if I do not have availability.

How do I pick my doula?

Intuition. In life, there are people that we connect with on an organic level and it just seems right. That’s the type of connection you want with your doula. It may take interviewing a few doulas to find the one that feels like the right fit. It’s important you feel comfortable with them as they’ll be supporting you during one of life’s most momentous events. I offer a complimentary meeting to see if we’re a good match.

Are doula services covered by insurance?

Unfortunately, birth doula services are not covered universally by insurance at this time. You can pay for birth doula care using your Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA).
